Influx is an illustrated ink and watercolour children's book, 6.5''x 6.5''. This simple story is about the complexities of life and the sometimes claustrophobic feelings it instills.
"at this point,
even a cough
gently encourages
my hair to aggregate
into clumps.
I’m sure it’s never
been this easy to
gather individuals towards
a common goal.
On the floor,
shower walls
-classic spectators
of people
who are falling
apart."
— Excerpt from the poem "air.h" by Viorica Hrincu.
“Moniker Press (Vancouver, BC) is about small runs (ahem) and ephemera, and especially collaborations between writers and visual artists. fol.cl shows how multiple artists can transmute an idea, batting it back and forth like two cats with a mouse. Viorica Hrincu’s short series of poems a loss of something considered essential to beauty, Which is essential to being loved. While Hrincu’s measured verse plays out, page by page. melissa Soleski’s illustrations build crazed, uncertain stairways, hose strange hair-creatures, weep and discover the brightness of flame and flower. “
— The Seattle Review of Books
"As women, we're told that it's only acceptable to have hair on our heads, and literally nowhere else on our bodies." — Viorica Hrincu
Poet and scientist Viorica Hrincu is bald. She was diagnosed with alopecia. Alopecia only affects hair growth and is neither painful nor life-threatening. The poems in fol.cl draw from Viorica’s experience, uncovering a sense of empowerment through loss. Combined with the delicate illustrations of Melissa Soleski, the publication not only deals with societal views on beauty, but also explores the inner and even biological connection between hair and identity.
